Every startup will have the same AI capabilities soon. The real question is what you build on top of a commodity.
There is a moment in every technology cycle when the revolutionary becomes the mundane. Electricity was once a competitive advantage; now it is a utility bill. The same happened with the internet, with cloud computing, with mobile. We are watching it happen with AI in real time, and the implications for founders are more profound than most people are willing to admit. Within the next eighteen months, the ability to deploy AI agents that can code, write, research, analyze, and orchestrate complex workflows will not be a startup's secret weapon. It will be a baseline expectation, as unremarkable as having a website. The question that keeps me up at night is not whether AI will be commoditized. It already is being commoditized. The question is: what do you build on top of a commodity?
I have had this conversation with dozens of founders over the past year. They all start from the same premise: "Our competitive advantage is that we use AI better than the competition." And they are right, for now. But "better AI usage" is a position that requires constant defense. Models improve on a six-month cycle. Today's cutting-edge prompt engineering is tomorrow's built-in feature. The thing that made you faster in January might be table stakes by June. I watched this play out in the early days of cloud computing. Everyone rushed to say they were "cloud-native" as if that alone were a strategy. The companies that survived were not the ones who were merely in the cloud; they were the ones who used the cloud's elasticity to do something structurally impossible before. That distinction matters enormously.
The deeper problem is that most AI-first startups are building on the same foundation. Claude, GPT-4o, Gemini, Llama. The foundation models are increasingly interchangeable for most practical tasks. The tooling is converging: vector databases, RAG pipelines, agent frameworks, MCP servers. The playbooks are being written in public. When I look at the AI startup landscape, I see a thousand teams building remarkably similar things with remarkably similar stacks, all convinced their prompt engineering or fine-tuning or agentic workflow is the secret sauce. Some of them are right, temporarily. But the real question is not who has the best AI implementation today. It is who will still have a structural advantage when the AI implementation is no longer difficult or rare.
The answer, I believe, lies somewhere most founders are not looking. It lies in the combination of three things that AI cannot manufacture: proprietary data, earned trust, and genuine domain depth. These are the actual moats of the next decade, and they are ironically the same moats that mattered in the pre-AI world. What AI does is change their relative value. If execution speed was once a moat, it no longer is. Any reasonably competent team with access to modern AI can ship fast. If "building features" was a differentiator, it no longer is either. A solo founder with the right agent stack can out-execute a twenty-person team on raw feature velocity. What you cannot manufacture with AI is ten years of relationships in a specific industry, or a dataset that only your customers generate, or a brand that people trust with their most sensitive problems.
When I was building the first version of Agentik OS, I made a classic early-stage mistake. I spent months optimizing for AI capability, obsessing over agent architectures, context window management, and orchestration patterns. All of that work was real and valuable. But the thing that actually drove early adoption had nothing to do with any of it. It was the fact that I had spent years working alongside the specific types of operators who were my target customers. I knew their workflows, their frustrations, their vocabulary, the specific way they thought about their problems. When I talked to them, they felt understood in a way that no amount of impressive demos could substitute. The AI was the engine. The domain knowledge was the steering wheel. Without the second, the first just drives you very fast in a random direction.
This matters enormously for how we think about building with AI. The narrative right now is that AI agents dramatically lower the cost of execution. That is true. But it creates a dangerous illusion: that the bottleneck was always execution. For many businesses, it was never execution. The bottleneck was knowing what to build, for whom, and why they would pay for it. AI makes the "how" nearly free. It does nothing for the "what" and the "why." I see founders with extraordinary agent setups shipping features at incredible velocity, and I want to ask them: does anyone want those features? Speed is only an advantage if you are running in the right direction. An AI-powered sprint toward the wrong destination just burns your runway faster and more efficiently than ever before.
There is a fascinating secondary effect that nobody is discussing openly: the commoditization of AI capabilities will actually increase the premium on human judgment. When every team can execute equally fast, the differentiator shifts entirely to decision quality. Which market to enter. Which customers to serve. Which features to prioritize. Which partnerships to pursue. These are not AI-solvable problems in any deep sense. You can use AI to analyze data, model scenarios, and synthesize research. But the final judgment call is still a human one, and a bad judgment call executed perfectly with an army of AI agents just burns your runway faster. The teams that will thrive are the ones that pair AI-speed execution with genuinely excellent judgment about what deserves to be executed on.
I want to be specific here, because this argument is easy to dismiss as generic wisdom. Consider the cybersecurity space. Every security startup can now deploy AI agents to scan for vulnerabilities, generate reports, and automate remediation recommendations. The AI capability is increasingly table stakes. What is not table stakes is having a reputation in the specific niche of healthcare compliance, or having relationships with the CISOs at the hundred companies most likely to buy, or having a dataset of resolved incidents that teaches the system what "fixed" actually looks like in a particular domain. The companies that understand this will invest accordingly. The companies that do not will keep optimizing their agent prompts while their moat evaporates beneath them.
The distribution question is similarly underappreciated. AI gives you the ability to create content, reach people, and scale communications. But it cannot manufacture audience trust. A newsletter with fifty thousand engaged readers built over five years is more valuable than an AI-generated newsletter reaching a million people who ignore it. A community of practitioners who trust your judgment because you have been in the trenches with them is not something you can spin up with a content agent. The founders who are quietly building these distribution assets, even as they also build with AI, are playing a longer game and a smarter one. They understand that AI amplifies distribution; it does not create it from scratch.
The strategic implication for how I think about Agentik OS is this: we are building for operators who already have hard-won domain expertise and need AI to multiply their effectiveness, not for people who are hoping AI will substitute for expertise they do not yet have. The difference is critical. The first category gets an enormous leverage boost. The second category gets an expensive lesson in the limits of artificial intelligence. When every startup has access to the same AI capabilities, the ones that win will be those where a human with genuine expertise is pointing the AI at the right problems. The expertise comes first. The AI amplification comes second. This sequence is not optional. It is the entire game.
I think about this in terms of what I call the "taste gap." Taste, in the product and business sense, is the ability to recognize quality, to know when something is good enough versus when it needs more work, to make aesthetic and strategic judgments that are not reducible to data. AI systems are getting better at many things, but they are still remarkably poor at taste in this sense. They will generate a thousand options without knowing which one is actually excellent. They will ship features without knowing if those features belong in the product. They will write content without knowing if that content serves the brand. The founders and operators who have developed taste, in their domain, in their craft, in their customer understanding, are the ones who can actually direct AI effectively. Everyone else is just generating output and hoping something sticks.
So here is where I land, after a year of building with AI agents every single day. The capabilities are extraordinary. The speed is real. The leverage is genuine. But the fundamental question of what makes a business worth building has not changed at all. You still need to understand something specific about the world that others do not yet see. You still need to earn the trust of people who will pay you. You still need to make better decisions than your competitors more often than not. AI makes all of these things easier to act on once you have them. It does not generate them for you. The startup that treats AI as a replacement for insight is building on sand. The startup that treats it as a multiplier on hard-won insight is building something that can actually last. The capability was never the moat. It was always the understanding of what to do with it.
