The Challenge

A founder with deep dental industry knowledge but no technical background needed an AI-powered dental practice management system. The product required patient management, AI-assisted clinical notes, treatment planning with AI suggestions, appointment scheduling, and Stripe subscription billing — all built with HIPAA-level security practices. The founder had validated demand with 15 dental practices expressing interest, but needed a working product to convert them into paying customers before competitor solutions launched.

Discovery Phase

We ran a 2-day discovery sprint mapping the clinical workflow from patient intake through treatment completion. We interviewed the founder about daily pain points in dental practices: manual note-taking during procedures, treatment plan formatting, patient communication templates, and insurance documentation. The key insight was that dentists spend 2-3 hours daily on administrative documentation that AI could reduce to 15 minutes.

Our Solution

We built the platform on Next.js with Convex as the real-time backend, Clerk for authentication with role-based access (dentist, hygienist, receptionist, admin), and Stripe for subscription billing with a 14-day free trial. The AI chatbot was trained with dental domain knowledge sourced from the founder's expertise — it assists with treatment planning, generates clinical note templates, drafts patient communication, and suggests follow-up protocols based on procedure type.

Architecture

Convex provides real-time data synchronization, meaning when a receptionist schedules an appointment, the dentist's dashboard updates instantly. The AI layer uses the Vercel AI SDK with streaming responses for a responsive chat experience. Patient data is encrypted at rest and in transit, with audit logging for all data access events. The multi-tenant model ensures each practice's data is completely isolated.
